Description
~ 1895 FRANKLIN NH New Hampshire CITY Directory GENEALOGY ~ Always posting uncommon books and ephemera of interest to folks who love history and genealogy. Today I'm listing two antique FRANKLIN, MERRIMACK COUNTY, NEW HAMPSHIRE Directories! This listing has 9 photos for your viewing pleasure. If you're doing late 19th century genealogy research of Merrimack County, NH, here's a useful resource! An original "Souvenir Directory of the City of Franklin, with many Illustrations and Brief historical Sketches", published by Towne & Robie, of Franklin Falls, N.H., 1895. This is NOT a reprint but the real thing, 113 years old, a 209-page hard cover, jam-packed with thousands of city residents and local businesses AND lots of black and white photos. AND this book has survived with the ORIGINAL MINT CONDITION FOLD-OUT CITY MAP in place! For each resident is given name, occupation, street address, and for factory workers it names their place of employment! Many mill workers here. If a widow or retired, or boarding (as is the case with adult children living with parents) that's so stated. If you're doing historical research of this city, at back is a directory of businesses and individual businessmen/women by occupation or type of business! AND there is a "Miscellaneous Directory" of city government officials and workers, fire & police dept. members, and names of churches & secret societies/fraternal organizations w/their dates of meeting. AND listings of officers of banks & loan associations, librarians, postal workers, cemetery association people board of the New Hampshire Orphans home, and newspaper publishers! There are also many text ads for businesses, some with great period illustrations. PHOTOS: photos are printed on glossy paper, and include head shot portraits of the mayor and councilmen, the Ox-Bow, Republican Bridge, fabulous street view of Central Street and looks like livestock auction going on, aerial view of river taken from back of Warren Daniell's barn, early portrait photo of Hon. George W. Nesmith who wrote the town charter, named residences of local wealthy people, Winnipisogee Paper Company buildings, Kidder Machine Company, Winnipeseogee Paper Co. Upper Pulp Mill, Franklin Needle Co., Walter Aiden's Sons' Hosiery Mill, Sulloway Mills, Franklin MIlls, old schoolhouses, New Hampshire Orphans' Home, and MORE! 39 PAGE HISTORICAL OVERVIEW & SKETCHES SECTION W/PHOTOS: this mentions important 19th century residents (does NOT name anyone who ever lived here, just the movers and shakers, not John Q. Public), important events and companies, long overview of the old schools, names of principals since 1876, etc. CONDITION & DESCRIPTION: top notch condition, 209 pages total, 9" x 6", pale gray paper labels covers on dark brown fabric hard cover. The pages of this book have no rips, marks, tears, dogears, writing, specks, foxing, moisture / damp marks, soiling, underlining, etc. All pages tight together and to cover. Often these directories are found with map missing - the map in this book is in FINE condition, intact to book, and appears to have not been referred to at all over the years. The cover is likewise in sound, sturdy condition, but not perfect. Some things I have to point out are obvious from my photos - there is rubbing wear around perimeter, a few tiny specks, light rubbing/bumping at upper and lower spine. Hinges are nice and tight, no wear. There is the occasional and rare little mark or smudge on a page but this is otherwise in far, far better condition than old city directories are found. This book has obviously been exposed to no bad conditions of moisture or dryness, has no "old paper smell" or mustiness, and it comes from a smoke-free home on my watch. You'll be well-pleased with the condition when you open your package and with your continued good care this will serve you and your family for many years to come. REGARDING LOOKUPS: Sorry folks, but to keep my historical paper in condition as offered for the high bidder, I don't type up information or make any form of copies or photos after listing, no exceptions. I'll be happy to check if one person or family is in here to help with your bidding decision and I'll reply yes or no. As I'm away from the house during the day, please allow at least 12 hours for me to receive your email and get back to you. If you inquire on the last day, I probably won't be able to get back to you. This 113-year-old historical directory is an excellent genealogy reference for the City of Franklin and would make a welcome donation to a local historical society or gift for your own family historian. If this fits in with your local history interests or you know someone who'd love to have it, just place that sincere bid to win now or take it away with BUY IT NOW! Satisfaction Guaranteed!
