Today I'm listing two antique FRANKLIN, MERRIMACK COUNTY, NEW HAMPSHIRE Directories! This listing has 7 photos for your viewing pleasure. If you're doing early-20th century historical or genealogy research of Merrimack County, NH, here's a useful resource! An original "Business Directory of the City of Franklin," compiled by Irving V. Goss, published by Towne & Robie, 1902. This is NOT a reprint but the real thing, 106 years old, jam-packed with thousands of city residents and local businesses. This has survived with the ORIGINAL MINT CONDITION FOLD-OUT CITY MAP in place! For each resident is given name, occupation, street address, and for factory workers it names their place of employment! Many mill workers here. If a widow or retired, or boarding (as is the case with adult children living with parents) that's so stated. If you're from this area, this will refresh your memory as to businesses long gone, as at back is a directory of businesses and individual businessmen/women by occupation or type of business! AND there is a "Miscellaneous Directory" of city government officials and workers, fire & police dept. members, and names of churches & secret societies/fraternal organizations w/their dates of meeting. AND listings of officers of banks & loan associations, librarians, postal workers, cemetery association people board of the New Hampshire Orphans home, and newspaper publishers! Did I not mention that there are also many text ads for businesses, some with illustrations, and a photo of the City Hall? CONDITION & DESCRIPTION: top notch condition, 169 pages total, 9" x 6", greenish-blue paper labels covers on black fabric hard cover. The pages of this book have no rips, marks, tears, dogears, writing, specks, foxing, moisture marks, soiling, underlining, etc. All pages tight together and to cover. Often these directories are found with map missing - the map in this is in FINE condition, appears to have not been referred to at all over the years. The cover is likewise in sound, sturdy condition, but not perfect. Some things I have to point out are obvious from my photos - the paper label covers are peeling towards spine edges, there is rubbing wear around perimeter, tip wear to boards, fabric wear at lower spine edge, and old oil spot on front that's not as contrasty as my photo came out. There is paper wear at the hinges exposing the buckram between interior covers and first page in from front, back hinge unworn, nice and tight. This has likely NOT been kept in an attic or basement, has been exposed to no bad conditions of moisture or dryness, has no "old paper smell" or mustiness, and it comes from a smoke-free home on my watch. You'll be well-pleased with the condition when you open your package!
